Joseph Alix Gauchier
Art keeps me alive and connected to my culture and homeland
Haitian artist Joseph Alix Gauchier
was born on March 18th, 1963 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
Discovered his vocation for the arts and started painting at the age of 16. After high school he moved to Florida to attend college where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design from the International Fine Art College Miami. After graduation, he specialized in Commercial Retail Design and is still active in the field.
Behind the Haitian Art
After many years living in the United States, he developed a deep curiosity for his Haitian culture and history which he so vibrantly expresses in his work. His deep passion for painting and art in general makes him very emotionally attached to his artwork and often finds it difficult to part with it. Alix believes most paintings need to be framed to reflect its true meaning, character and dimension. He sees art as a reflection of both the visible and invisible realities and the powers that surround us. His love for the “tambour” (drum) is prominent in many of his latest paintings. According to Alix, the tambour is a very powerful and ethereal instrument capable of carrying us to another realm and he uses it as a symbol of a spiritual being.OIL
As a Haitian artist inspired by Raoul Viard, a true Haitian legend of impressionism, I started using the knife with oil paint early on in my works. Over the years I started combining the knife and brush to create and develop my passion for the Haitian culture. Ever since, oil paint remains my favorite media.
PASTEL
During my years as an art student, I started experimenting with pastel in order to express the richest colors in the Haitian art. While I do like the media, it has never become my true or favorite way of creating and expressing my work.
DRAWINGS
Drawing using pencils and markers has long been a favorite of mine as an artist. I started drawings at an early age sketching Haitian landscapes and figures. I often start sketching first on canvas before adding colors.
DESIGN
Design has always been a strong passion of mine. As an Interior Designer, I love creating the illusion and bringing to life the ideas and the vision of my clients. The reward is to see the concept materialized.
